Deploy SNMP Management Tools

Download or Install an SNMP Management Tool

In order to take advantage of Packeteer SNMPv1, v2c and v3 capabilities, you must implement some sort of SNMP management tool. A wide variety of both commercial and shareware packages are available. Commercial applications include HP OpenView Network Node Manager, Micromuse, and SunNetManager, among others. Freeware and shareware, including MRTG, STG, and UDC-SNMP, are available over the Internet.

If your organization uses a commercial SNMP management software package, you should incorporate the Packeteer MIBs with that software. Otherwise, consider whether you need a full-featured, commercial SNMP management package or if you just need the basic polling, setting, and graphing utilities offered by free software. If you decide to explore free, downloadable SNMP software packages, you can use a search engine to help locate such software. A good place to start your search is http://www.wtcs.org/snmp4tpc/links.htm, a links page containing information regarding a variety of software packages.

Incorporate Packeteer MIBs

Regardless of the SNMP management tool you use, you’ll need to download the Packeteer MIBs and incorporate them with your software in order for the SNMP tool to function properly with your PacketWise device. The MIBs can be downloaded from Packeteer's customer support website.

A software application for integrating PacketWise MIBs with HP OpenView is also available for download from the Packeteer website. Specific steps needed to incorporate the MIBs into any other software package can be found in the documentation for that tool.

Configure PacketShapers for SNMP support

You must configure PacketWise to automatically send messages, such as event notifications or warnings of alarm conditions (such as Link Down), to any SNMP trap listener, or work with any standard SNMP program, such as HP OpenView or Packeteer ReportCenter.
